Did you know?

Fleas feed on blood meals from cats or dogs, but undisturbed, can live more than 100 days without feeding!

Female fleas begin to lay eggs within 36-48 hours after their first blood meal. A female flea can lay up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime (which is on average 3-4 months).

A female flea consumes 15 times her own body weight of blood in a day!

Adult fleas suck blood from their animal host; however larvae live and feed on organic debris in the host animal’s environment.

If you see only 1 flea, there could be over 100 offspring lurking in nearby furniture, corners, cracks and carpeting…and even on your pet!

The species of fleas that infect both dogs and cats depend on a tropical environment for survival, but do not forget that fleas are well adapted to indoor living (your house or cottage) during the cold Canadian months.

There are more than 2,000 known species of fleas, however the cat flea (which also affects dogs) accounts for most fleas found in North America.

The largest flea recorded in North America was almost ½ inch!

Some pets develop a severe allergy to flea saliva which causes severe irritation and itchiness.
